Can a pharmacist prescribe medicines?

I was watching your online video to understand the difference between pharmacy retail store and chemist store.

I need to know few information as I am doing a research on understanding how pharmacies work in India.

  1. Can the pharmacy get into direct marketing activities with the consumers?
  2. Can a pharmacist prescribe medicines?
  3. Are there any restrictions about who can access Family Planning products/ services through drug shops or pharmacies?
  4. Can a pharmacist administer Injections if the client wants?

1. Can the pharmacy get into direct marketing activities with the consumers?

Most pharmaceutical products are prescription based. Pharmacy can't get into the direct marketing activity of prescription medicines. But for OTC, cosmetics, nutraceuticals and ayurvedic products, pharmacy can indulge into direct marketing activity. Check difference between over the counter and prescription drugs.

2. Can a pharmacist prescribe medicines?

A pharmacist is not eligible to prescribe a medicine. A pharmacist is only liable to dispense medicine against the prescription of a registered medical practitioner (RMP). know more about RMP

3. Are there any restrictions about who can access Family Planning products/ services through drug shops or pharmacies?

Only OTC family planning products like condoms, unwanted 72 or similar products are accessible to the general public but restricted products like MTP kits are not allowed without proper prescription, reason mentioned and register maintained against prescription of eligible medical practitioner.  

4. Can a pharmacist administer Injections if the client wants?

No, a pharmacist is not eligible to administer injection at patient or caretaker request.
