Drug Rehabilitation:
Drug Rehab is a short form of Drug Rehabilitation.
Drug rehabilitation is a process to treat a patient who is addicted to drugs/alcohol. It involves medical and psychotherapeutic treatment which is intended to enable person to avoid addictive substances consumption. Most common addicted substances are psychoactive substances such as alcohol, prescription drugs and narcotic and psychotropic substances like cannabis, cocaine, heroin or amphetamine etc.

According to Wikipedia, “Drug rehabilitation is the process of medical or psychotherapeutic treatment for dependency on psychoactive substances such as alcohol, prescription drugs, and street drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, heroin or amphetamines. The general intent is to enable the patient to confront substance dependence, if present, and cease substance abuse to avoid the psychological, legal, financial, social, and physical consequences that can be caused, especially by extreme abuse”. Drug and alcohol abuse is a worldwide problem and special attention is required to counter with it. In India, Drug abuse is one of the major problem.

The last National Survey on the extent, pattern and trend of drug abuse was sponsored by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and conducted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in the year 2000-2001. The report was published in 2004. The Survey estimated that about 7.32 Crore persons in India were users of alcohol and drugs. Of these 87 lakh used Cannabis, 20 lakh used opiates and 6.25 Crore were users of Alcohol. The survey covered 40,697 individuals. Drug Rehabilitation Centre:
Drug Rehabilitation center is a residential set-up for drug and/or alcohol treatment program. Rehabilitation centers are usually abstinence-based and provide an intense programme of support and care aimed at people who have difficulty becoming drug free in the community.

How to open a rehabilitation center and obtain license for it?

No drug rehabilitation centre is allowed to operate unless it has obtained license from licensing authority.
To get a licence for a drug and alcoholic De addiction center, one need to have a team of following professionals like psychiatrist, physician, MSW, Psychologist, Nurses and a 50 or 100 bedded capacity accommodation with each toilet for 5 patients etc .Then you have to apply for license at prescribed form DC office or his nominee with a prescribed fee draft. They will forward it to the concerned District Surgeon who will visit and inspect and then give the report back to Dc Office. If all requirements are found to be satisfactory, a license will be issued.

Staff Requirements:
  • A MBBS doctor (having experience in mental disorders) or MD psychiatrist
  • Trained counsellor/Social Workers
  • Staff nurses, ward attendants and trained staff
  • Cleaners and Security Personnel’s

Other Requirements:
  • Have requisite number of beds (One for each patient), adequate accommodation and proper spacing between the beds
  • Have sufficient ventilation and free from pollution
  • Have proper facilities like drinking water, washing, cleaning , bathing, sanitation etc
  • Clean Bed linens, utensils and articles
  • Fresh, nutritious and adequate meal facility
  • Reception and enquiry/registration counter/waiting area
  • Room for providing counselling individual/family
  • Store rooms for patient records
  • Educational material etc

How to Register as a Pharmacist in India?
